Boriqua Pride

Puerto Rican GLBT leaders create fundraising group

Above is the link to the article about the Institute of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture, the nation’s first museum of Puerto Rican art and history,  soon to be built in Humboldt Park.  Several community leaders recently banded together and formed a group charged with promoting GLBT contributions in the Chicago Puerto Rican community, called Boriqua Pride.

Coincidently, I met a graduate student who mentioned this fundraiser at the Inaugural Latina and Latino Studies Event, “Claiming Space: Moral Economy in Latino Chicago,” where I spoke about the student activism involved to get the new program started.  I mentioned in my speech that my work for Latina/o Studies allowed me to branch out to other social justice causes and helped me “come out.” Anyway, he told me about a “Boriqua Pride” event, which I thought was a heritage pride, not gay pride. (lol!)  Once I saw the facebook invite and the article in the Chicago Free Press, it all made sense.  It completely caught me off guard.
